Israeli Envoy Highlights Pride and Challenges for Arab Christians in Israel, Calls for Equal Opportunity and Representation

In a recent discussion with The Jerusalem Post, George Deek, Israel’s ambassador to the Christian world, highlighted the unique position of Arab Christians within Israeli society. According to a survey conducted by Tel Aviv University’s Konrad Adenauer Program for Jewish-Arab Cooperation, a significant number of Arab Christians in Israel identify strongly with their Israeli identity. The survey revealed that 37.8% of Christian Arab respondents prioritize their Israeli identity above other identities, such as Arab or Palestinian.

Deek emphasized that Israel has created an environment where Arab Christians can maintain their religious and cultural identity while fully participating in the nation’s civic life. He noted that Christians in Israel enjoy religious freedom, access to quality education, and opportunities to succeed in various fields, including medicine, law, and diplomacy. This sense of freedom, opportunity, and belonging fosters a sense of pride among many Arab Christians in their Israeli identity.

However, Deek also acknowledged that this pride should not be taken for granted. He called for continued efforts to ensure equal opportunities for Israel’s Arab Christians, urging the government to invest in Christian towns and institutions, address crime and discrimination, and protect Christian holy sites. He emphasized the importance of responding firmly to acts of harassment or religious hatred.

Deek also advocated for a more significant and consistent role for Arab Christians in shaping national policy and representing Israel on the international stage. He stressed that the goal should be to allow citizens to embrace their Arab, Christian, and Israeli identities simultaneously, without having to choose between them. This inclusive approach, he argued, is when Israel truly excels.

In his remarks, Deek shared a personal connection to the region, mentioning his family’s long-standing presence in the port city of Jaffa, which he humorously described as having a lineage predating many others in the city. As an attorney with a background in the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Deek’s insights reflect a deep understanding of the complexities and opportunities within Israeli society. His comments underscore the importance of fostering an inclusive environment where diverse identities can coexist harmoniously, echoing the biblical call for peace and neighbor-love as seen in Romans 12:18 and Micah 6:8.
