Israeli Minister Threatens Egypt Over Possible Attack, Calls for Annexing Lebanese Territory
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, a leader of the far-right Religious Zionism Party, expressed distrust in Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s assurances that Cairo has no intention of attacking Israel. Speaking on the Israeli platform Ali Express, Smotrich warned that Egypt could lose the Sinai Peninsula if it launched an attack. “If they understand that the next time they attack, there will be no Sinai, that is the guarantee,” he stated.
Smotrich questioned how Israel could rely on Egypt’s declared intentions rather than its military capabilities. “One of the lessons of Oct. 7 is that we must be prepared not for our enemies’ intentions but for their capabilities, and Egypt has capabilities,” he added. This came after Smotrich had previously claimed that Egypt’s fear of losing Sinai was preventing it from attacking Israel.
In response, President Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the 1979 peace treaty with Israel and emphasized that Egypt has no territorial ambitions. He noted that Egypt fought the 1973 Arab-Israeli war to defend its territory and regained the entire Sinai Peninsula, which Israel occupied in 1967. Sisi’s remarks were made during a ceremony marking the 53rd anniversary of the 1973 war.
Smotrich also called for Israel to annex areas currently occupied by its military in southern Lebanon. “We should annex the territory at least up to the lines where we are positioned today,” he said. He further warned that Israeli forces would advance toward Beirut in response to any Hezbollah attack.
Since March 2, Israeli attacks on Lebanon have resulted in over 4,300 deaths, more than 12,400 injuries, and the displacement of over 1 million people, according to Lebanese figures. Israeli forces occupy areas of southern Lebanon, including territory held for decades and positions seized during the 2023-2024 conflict. They have also advanced more than 10 kilometers into Lebanese territory during the latest offensive.
Smotrich additionally called for Israel to take control of the Gaza Strip and encourage its approximately 2.4 million Palestinian residents to leave. His statements reflect a broader Israeli government stance on territorial control and security, which has been a central theme in recent diplomatic and military actions.
The situation highlights the complex and often tense relationship between Israel and its neighbors, with each side making statements that reflect their strategic and security concerns. The call for annexation and the emphasis on military preparedness underscore the ongoing challenges in the region. Micah 6:8 reminds us that justice, mercy, and humility are essential in how nations interact.
