Israeli PM Netanyahu Warns of Potentially Hostile Future US President, Calls for Alliances with India and Latin America
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Sunday that a future U.S. president could be hostile toward Israel, urging the country to build new alliances with nations such as India and those in Latin America. The remarks were made during an event where Netanyahu outlined his security doctrine, nine days before Israel’s October 27 election.
The warning came hours before a strong endorsement from U.S. President Donald Trump, who publicly expressed support for Netanyahu’s re-election bid days before the polls opened. Netanyahu acknowledged the uncertainty of future U.S. policy, stating, “In two years, a President, man or woman, could come to power who is very hostile to Israel.” He questioned how Israel should prepare for such a scenario and what strategies would be necessary.
Netanyahu emphasized the importance of leveraging the remaining years of Trump’s presidency to strengthen Israel’s position in the American arena. “First, we must do everything we can during these two years, and during the following two years, in the American arena, through good times and bad,” he said. He also highlighted the need to diversify Israel’s alliances, stating, “The second thing is to create other alliances. That is what I am working on now with many countries in our region and outside it.”
India was cited as a key partner, with Netanyahu noting its significant influence. He pointed to political shifts in Latin America as another opportunity to expand Israel’s network of allies. “There is a major shift in Latin America, and there could be an enormous change in Brazil in just a few days,” he said. “We must expand our pool of alliances and develop capabilities that make us valuable to everyone.”
Netanyahu has frequently highlighted his relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, using it to demonstrate Israel’s global standing and diplomatic achievements. In May, he described India as a country with “huge power” and “crazy love” for Israel, reinforcing the importance of this alliance.
Analysts in Israel suggest that Netanyahu’s approach has shaped perceptions of his leadership, particularly regarding his relationships with U.S. presidents. His interactions with Democratic leaders like Barack Obama and Joe Biden were often tense, which he framed as a display of strength and commitment to Israel’s interests. This narrative has been central to his election campaigns and has contributed to his electoral success.
Netanyahu’s focus on alliances and strategic positioning reflects a broader effort to secure Israel’s geopolitical standing amid ongoing conflicts and shifting international dynamics. His statements underscore the challenges of maintaining stability and influence in an unpredictable global environment.
