A photograph circulating online on May 6 depicted an Israeli soldier placing a cigarette in the mouth of a statue of the Virgin Mary in the village of Debel. This incident has drawn significant attention, echoing a similar event less than three weeks prior, where another soldier was caught on video destroying a statue of Jesus.

The Israeli army’s spokesperson issued a statement expressing “utmost severity” regarding the incident, emphasizing that the soldier’s actions “completely deviate from the values expected of its personnel.” This response mirrors the language used following the earlier incident, leading to skepticism among Christian communities who observe a recurring pattern of such events.

Stephen Sizer, an expert on Christian Zionism and former vicar of the Church of England, suggests that these repeated acts of desecration are intertwined with the ideological underpinnings of Israel’s regional conduct. He argues that Zionism, as a form of settler colonial supremacism, inherently involves practices of separation and segregation, which can manifest in the desecration of religious symbols held dear by indigenous communities.

The latest incident occurred shortly after another video surfaced, showing an Israeli soldier destroying a statue of Jesus in Debel. In response to that event, the soldier involved, along with the one who filmed the act, were removed from combat roles and sentenced to 30 days in military prison. However, six other soldiers who witnessed the act but did not intervene were only subjected to disciplinary discussions, a response that critics deemed insufficient.
