Jehovah’s Witnesses held one of their annual conventions in Memphis this past weekend, with organizers reporting that members booked hundreds of hotel rooms and spent time at local restaurants and retail businesses. The event, which drew attendees from across the region, is part of a larger convention season in the city, with three more events planned this summer.

Alan Cooper, a local Jehovah’s Witnesses spokesman, noted that Memphis’ strategic location makes it an ideal host for the group’s conventions. “Memphis is very conveniently located to several different states, where our members come from,” he said. “So, we’ll have people this week from Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. But in our future events, this convention season, they’ll be coming in from Missouri and Kentucky as well.”

Cooper estimated that around 10,000 members will visit the Mid-South this summer for the group’s conventions. “It’s exciting for us,” he said. “Jehovah’s Witnesses have conventions in the United States in 135 different cities. Memphis is one of those. But we have four conventions in Memphis. That’s thousands of people using hundreds of hotel rooms daily throughout those conventions … And so, we’re happy to be able to do that in Memphis. It works for us. It’s a nice location, a beautiful facility and it’s nice to know that we’re appreciated in the community as well.”

The group places emphasis on maintaining positive relationships with local businesses. Cooper explained that members receive guidance on proper etiquette when visiting hotels and restaurants, including the importance of tipping service workers. “That is something that we feel is very important,” he said. “We want communities to look forward to our visits. We love when hotels welcome us back year after year. It makes us think that those reminders about being patient, showing courtesy, leaving tips, they bring fruit. Individuals enjoyed dealing with us because we do receive those reminders and we view that as part of our outreach to the community.”

Cooper also highlighted the group’s efforts to ensure the convention center remains clean and well-maintained. “We want to make sure that it’s as clean as possible for when the convention delegates get here,” he said. “But then also when we leave, we love to leave it in better shape than we found.” This attention to detail reflects the group’s broader commitment to community engagement and mutual respect.
