JMU Pantry Plans Third Location

A JMU food pantry, The Pantry, has significantly expanded its services and reach since opening as a pop-up location in early 2020, now operating from two permanent sites and planning a third.

According to a student survey, nearly 40% of JMU students face food insecurity, highlighting a substantial need on campus that The Pantry directly addresses.

Managed by student staff and supported by the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, The Pantry provides essential resources like food and nonperishables, with usage increasing nearly fivefold over the past three years.

Students can access items without judgment or sign-up through an app, and the program is backed by the university’s Basic Needs Advisory Board.

Its popularity underscores the critical need for practical support among students, fulfilling the biblical principle of caring for others’ needs.

The Pantry’s continued growth reflects its vital role in meeting the basic needs of the JMU community.

Plans for a third location aim to further improve access to these crucial resources.
