Lexington Salvation Army Leader Shares Anti-LGBTQ Message During Service (Lexington, Kentucky)
Major Kevin Schoch, leader of the Lexington Salvation Army chapter, delivered a sermon containing anti-LGBTQ rhetoric during a Sunday service. Schoch claimed schools are pressuring students with discussions about LGBTQ issues, describing the effort as a means to “turn their children away from God.” His remarks included criticism of transgender youth, gender identity, and critical race theory.
The sermon was livestreamed on the Salvation Army’s Facebook page, but the video was later removed. When LEX 18 sought to speak with Schoch at the organization’s Main Street office, they were unable to reach him. The incident has drawn criticism from local advocates, who argue that the Salvation Army’s mission statement emphasizes service without discrimination.
Chris Hartman, director of the Fairness Campaign in Kentucky, called the remarks “disappointing, disturbing, and downright discriminatory.” He noted the Salvation Army’s public commitment to inclusivity, pointing to its mission statement that states, “Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.” Hartman emphasized the dangers of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, particularly for youth, who face higher rates of depression and suicidality when not supported.
Timothy Lyle, the Salvation Army’s divisional commander for parts of Ohio and Kentucky, responded to the inquiry, stating he had not seen the video but was investigating. He acknowledged the importance of addressing concerns within the congregation, saying, “If something was stated today that was offensive I think we would say ‘I’m sorry’ if someone was offended.” Lyle emphasized the Salvation Army’s belief in equality and its commitment to serving all people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation.
The Salvation Army’s teachings are rooted in the Bible, with Lyle asserting that the organization values and loves every family equally. He reiterated the group’s stance against discrimination and its dedication to embracing all individuals. However, the incident has raised questions about the alignment of public statements with the organization’s stated values.
