Local Church Distributes Over 1,000 Backpacks to Students in Need
Valley Vineyard Church in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, recently hosted its annual backpack and school supplies giveaway, providing over 1,000 filled backpacks to students in need. The event, which took place on a Sunday, saw families lining up to collect the supplies, a tradition that has continued for nearly two decades.
Pastor Michael Houle emphasized the significance of the effort, calling it an “overwhelming blessing and privilege” to see the community come together. The church has consistently focused on meeting practical needs, ensuring that students have the tools necessary to succeed in school.
Student volunteers from Chippewa Falls High School played a key role in the preparation, spending days packing backpacks with essentials like pencils and notebooks. Donna Dettmer, a long-time volunteer, expressed gratitude for the community’s support, noting that the event is made possible through the generosity of others.
Parents and guardians were able to collect the pre-packed supplies by driving to the church on Sunday. Houle reflected on the personal impact of each backpack, highlighting that behind every number is a child who receives a meaningful gift. He shared a story of a middle school student who expressed excitement about not being picked on at school with new supplies.
Houle stressed that the true value of the giveaway lies in the individual stories of those who benefit. “There’s a student and a face behind each one of these backpacks,” he said, underscoring the importance of recognizing the human element in such efforts.
For families who could not attend the Sunday event, the church will continue distributing the remaining backpacks throughout the week during its regular food pantry hours. This ongoing commitment reflects the church’s dedication to serving the community through mercy and practical support.
