Maui’s Largest Church and Nonprofit Partner to Build Safe Haven for Wildfire Evacuees

In a compassionate response to the devastating wildfires in Lahaina, Maui’s largest church, King’s Cathedral and Family Life Center, has partnered with a nonprofit organization to create a safe haven for evacuees. This initiative, driven by a commitment to serve, aims to provide temporary housing on 10 acres of scrub land owned by the church.

The project, which began as a response to the loss of the church’s Lahaina location in the fire, has mobilized a community of volunteers. These volunteers, while still processing their own grief, are dedicated to making a tangible difference. King’s Cathedral Pastor Joshua Morocco is coordinating with various aid groups to ensure the swift construction of these temporary homes.

Maude Cumming of Family Life Center expressed the remarkable nature of the project, highlighting the team’s ability to transform bare land into habitable homes within two weeks. The organizers are prepared for the possibility that the village might be needed for up to two years, though the duration remains uncertain.

The initiative reflects a proactive approach, with the organizers choosing not to wait for government intervention. If plans proceed as expected, the first evacuees could be moved into these temporary homes by late September.
