The #MeToo movement has reached Point Loma Nazarene University, where theology professor and pastor John Wright has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. A lawsuit filed in mid-January alleges that Wright, who previously taught at the institution and serves as pastor at the Mid-City Church of the Nazarene, raped and sexually assaulted a former student, Amy McClanahan.

McClanahan, a former PLNU student, filed the lawsuit on January 16, 2018, claiming Wright used sexual relationships with her as a form of healing therapy. She disclosed she suffers from PTSD resulting from childhood sexual abuse. The lawsuit also names the Mid-City Church of the Nazarene and 20 unnamed defendants. Wright and his wife, who is also a pastor at the church, have counter-sued McClanahan, alleging illegal recordings and harassment.

McClanahan met Wright in 2014 while he was a theology professor at PLNU. She said she was drawn to him and joined his church, believing he could guide her spiritually. The lawsuit alleges that Wright began offering her healing through sexual relationships, convincing her that it was necessary for her recovery from past trauma. The relationship, which lasted nearly a year, ended in October 2017.

According to the lawsuit, McClanahan did not consent to any sexual acts with Wright. The complaint states that Wright used his position of authority to pressure her into the relationship, emphasizing that the sexual activity was part of her healing process. The legal documents describe how the relationship progressed from casual meetings to a sexual relationship, with McClanahan believing she was receiving spiritual and emotional healing.

The lawsuit highlights the power dynamic in the relationship, noting that McClanahan could not consent to the sexual contacts due to Wright’s influence. The complaint asserts that Wright’s actions violated her autonomy and that the relationship was not consensual. The case continues as both parties pursue legal action, with the university investigating Wright’s conduct.
