New 40-unit tiny house village opens on Tukwila church lot
The new 40-unit tiny house village in Tukwila, Washington, opened on March 11, 2026, offering temporary housing and supportive services to homeless families and individuals. Located on land owned by Church By the Side of the Road (CBSR), the village is a collaborative effort between CBSR and the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI). The initiative aims to provide shelter and access to essential resources for those in need.
The site includes 40 tiny houses and community facilities such as a kitchen, hygiene trailer, laundry room, and recreation space. These amenities are designed to support residents during their time in the village. The location, at 3455 S. 148th St., is part of CBSR’s long-standing commitment to serving the Tukwila community through acts of mercy and compassion.
Staffing the village 24 hours a day ensures safety and operational efficiency. Residents are required to follow a code of conduct and engage in case management to access employment opportunities and permanent housing. This structured approach reflects a balance between providing immediate relief and fostering long-term solutions.
Pastor Terrence Proctor of CBSR emphasized the church’s dedication to serving the community, stating, “Our church family is excited to see the vision of providing shelter for our unhoused neighbors come true.” The congregation’s support over the past few years highlights their commitment to living out faith through service and compassion.
LIHI, a nonprofit housing organization, operates three tiny house villages in Tukwila and sponsors 17 across King and Pierce counties. In 2025, the organization sheltered over 1,600 people, with 55% of households exiting the program and transitioning into permanent housing. This success underscores the potential of such initiatives to make a meaningful impact.
According to the January 2024 Point-in-Time count, 16,868 people were experiencing homelessness in King County, with 9,810 living unsheltered. The opening of the CBSR Village is seen as a step toward addressing this crisis by creating more pathways to stability and support. The project aligns with the biblical call to care for the vulnerable, as seen in Matthew 25:35, where Jesus emphasizes the importance of serving those in need.
