Ohio United Methodist Church Faced Lawsuit Over Alleged Abuse by Music Director
The Ohio United Methodist Church faces a civil lawsuit alleging it ignored warnings about sexual abuse by a music director. Attorneys announced the case Tuesday, claiming the church failed to act after being informed of an employee’s misconduct. The complaint accuses John Slate, a former music director, of using his position to isolate and groom children.
Survivors Jane Doe and Mary Doe allege Slate abused them over years, starting when Jane was 15 and Mary was 13. The abuse occurred in various locations, including church grounds, Slate’s car, and an apartment he rented. The complaint states church leaders did not report the abuse, remove Slate from access to children, or investigate the allegations.
Attorneys emphasized the preventable nature of the abuse, stressing the need for accountability. Jane Doe shared her experience, expressing how her childhood was taken from her. She urged others affected to seek help, emphasizing that the abuse is not their fault.
Slate was convicted for unlawful sexual misconduct with minors and is a tier III sex offender. He received five years of probation and 36 months in prison. Attorneys argue that silence protects institutions and that survivors must come forward to prevent similar incidents.
The United Methodist Church’s branch responsible for legal matters has been contacted for comment. Updates will follow once a response is received. The case highlights the importance of protecting the vulnerable and ensuring accountability within religious institutions.
