Orthodox Christians Across Eastern Europe Generally Oppose Acceptance of Homosexuality, with Exceptions in Greece and the U.S.
Orthodox Christians across Eastern Europe largely hold socially conservative views on gender issues and homosexuality. The majority of Orthodox Christians in countries such as Armenia, Russia, and Ukraine express strong opposition to the acceptance of homosexuality in society. This stance aligns with the broader conservative views of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which emphasizes traditional family structures and moral teachings.
In contrast, Orthodox Christians in Greece and the United States show more openness. Nearly half of Greek Orthodox Christians believe society should accept homosexuality, and a majority of U.S. Orthodox Christians hold a similar view. These exceptions highlight the diversity within the Orthodox community, particularly in regions where Western cultural influences are more pronounced.
The survey also reveals differences in attitudes toward other social issues. In former Soviet republics, there is greater opposition to legal abortion compared to other parts of Eastern Europe. Ethiopian Orthodox Christians, in particular, exhibit the most conservative views on social matters, often opposing abortion, divorce, and alcohol consumption.
Environmentalism is another area where Orthodox Christians show unity. The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, known as the “Green Patriarch,” has promoted environmental protection, and most Orthodox Christians support this cause. This reflects a growing awareness within the church of the need to care for creation, even at the expense of economic growth.
The survey underscores the varied perspectives within the Orthodox community on contemporary social issues. While there is broad agreement on certain matters, such as environmental stewardship and traditional gender roles, there are notable differences in attitudes toward homosexuality and abortion. These differences reflect the complex interplay of cultural, historical, and theological factors within the Orthodox world.
The findings highlight the importance of understanding the diverse views within the Orthodox Church. As the church navigates modern challenges, it must balance traditional teachings with the realities of a changing world. The call to protect the vulnerable and uphold justice, as seen in Micah 6:8, remains a central theme in the church’s mission.
