Pastor Stephen Stewart (Stew) Chapman, who passed away on December 16, 2024, at Kettering Hospital, was a devoted servant in the Wesleyan Church. Known to many as “Stew,” he was celebrated for his warmth and kindness, never meeting a stranger he did not like. His life was marked by a deep commitment to family, faith, and community service.

Born on February 3, 1959, in Indiana, Chapman’s early years were shaped by his father’s ministry, leading the family to move frequently across the state. He graduated from Harrison High School in Evansville, IN, and later worked in the dietary department at Deaconess Hospital for 14 years. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Karen Ann Barron, and began his journey toward a life of ministry.

Chapman’s passion for ministry was evident as he served on the worship team and Children’s ministry at Trinity Wesleyan Church and Diamond Valley Nazarene Church in Evansville. He also worked as a radio announcer at WVHI AM 1330 and WMPI Country Radio, showcasing his diverse talents. In 2000, he was ordained as a minister in the Wesleyan Church, marking the beginning of his pastoral career.

He pastored at Scottsburg Wesleyan Church from 1998 to 2002 and later served at North Vernon Wesleyan Church under Pastor Jim Terry. In 2003, Chapman and his family moved to Sidney, OH, where he pastored at Sidney Wesleyan Church for 14 years. He continued to serve in various capacities, including at Pathway Open Bible Church in Sidney, and later at Cornerstone Wesleyan Church in West Carrollton, OH, for six years.

After his time in West Carrollton, Chapman and his wife moved to Miamisburg, OH, where he attended Assurance Baptist Church. His legacy is carried on by his wife, Karen, and their children, Laura and Christopher, along with his extended family and friends.

Chapman’s life and ministry reflect a dedication to serving others, a trait that aligns with Micah 6:8, which calls for justice, mercy, and humble service. His journey through various churches and ministries exemplifies a life lived in service to others.
