Police Identify Two Amish Children Killed in Van Crash in Richland, N.Y.
The New York State Police have identified the two Amish children who were killed when a vehicle crashed into their buggies on September 25. The deceased were 13-year-old Anna J. Hershberger and 7-year-old Moses J. Hershberger. A 9-year-old girl, also involved in the crash, was critically injured and taken to Upstate University Hospital. As of Monday, her condition has been upgraded to stable, though she remains hospitalized.
Troopers responded to the crash around 9:16 a.m. at the intersection of County Route 41 and Manwaring Road in the Town of Richland. A preliminary investigation found that a 47-year-old from Sandy Creek, N.Y., was traveling south on County Route 41 when their van struck two Amish buggies traveling in the same direction. One buggy had four people, and the other had five.
The first buggy contained four boys and the 9-year-old girl. The boys were taken to the hospital for evaluation and listed in stable condition. The second buggy included the Hershbergers and two other children: a 10-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl. The police noted that the boy sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the 8-year-old girl was not hurt.
No tickets or charges have been announced against the van driver. The police have not disclosed the circumstances leading to the crash. The incident has prompted a broader reflection on the safety of Amish communities, particularly in areas where traditional transportation methods coexist with modern roadways.
The Amish community, known for its commitment to peace and neighborly care, has faced various challenges in navigating contemporary society. Their emphasis on community and mutual support is evident in their response to such tragedies. The incident underscores the importance of vigilance and cooperation between different groups to ensure the safety of all road users.
In the wake of such events, the Amish community often turns to their faith for guidance and strength. Their teachings emphasize the protection of the vulnerable and the pursuit of justice, values that resonate deeply in times of sorrow and loss. The community’s response to this tragedy reflects a steadfast commitment to these principles.
