Presbyterian Church of Ireland faces criminal investigation over safeguarding issues
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has initiated a criminal investigation into safeguarding issues within the Presbyterian Church of Ireland (PCI), following concerns raised over a period spanning from 2009 to 2022. The probe comes after the resignation of the church’s moderator, Rev Trevor Gribben, who cited “serious and significant failings” in the church’s handling of safeguarding matters.
Assistant Chief Constable Davy Beck announced the formation of a dedicated investigation team to ensure accountability. He emphasized the importance of holding perpetrators to account and assured that the team would work to secure justice for victims. The PCI has expressed its willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation, stating it will provide all relevant information and documents to support the police inquiries.
The church’s former head of safeguarding, Dr Jacqui Montgomery-Devlin, expressed concerns about the current leadership’s ability to address safeguarding issues effectively. She had been responsible for safeguarding over 500 churches across the island of Ireland since 2019. When asked about her comments, the PCI stated it had no further comments to add beyond what had already been shared publicly.
ACC Beck highlighted the collaboration between the PSNI and various statutory authorities, noting that the investigation aims to prioritize the needs of victims. He encouraged anyone affected to come forward, assuring them of sensitivity and professionalism in the process. The police have confirmed they will not comment on specific allegations or individuals at this stage, but they have stated the investigation will seek to identify victims and perpetrators, and determine if criminal offenses have occurred.
The PSNI’s approach reflects a commitment to transparency and justice, aligning with the biblical principle of seeking truth and righteousness. As Proverbs 11:1 reminds us, “A false balance is an abomination to the Lord, but a weighing of justice is his delight.” This investigation underscores the importance of accountability and the pursuit of justice, which are central to both legal and moral obligations.
