Rezoning for Killeen Homeless Shelter Moves Forward Despite Neighbor Concerns

In Killeen, Texas, a significant step has been taken towards establishing a new homeless shelter. The Planning and Zoning Commission has approved a rezoning request for a site off Medical Drive, allowing the city council to consider the proposal further. This development comes as Armor of God Outreach plans to fill the gap left by Friends in Crisis, which is scaling back its homeless shelter operations due to funding constraints. Friends in Crisis is redirecting its resources to focus on domestic violence and veteran programs.

The proposed site has sparked discussions among local residents and businesses. Concerns were raised at a recent Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, with a neighborhood father questioning whether additional police presence would be funded by the shelter. Travis Davis from Sonic Drive-In shared experiences of challenges faced by businesses in areas with high homelessness, including closures in Austin and nearby regions. The site’s proximity to a neighborhood, a Sonic restaurant, and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and School has heightened safety concerns among some community members.

Carlos Partida, principal of St. Joseph Catholic Academy, emphasized the need for a comprehensive city plan addressing security, supervision, and emergency response, particularly given the shelter’s closeness to a school. JT Haun, representing Armor of God Outreach, acknowledged these concerns and expressed a commitment to working with the community. He is in discussions with security companies to ensure the facility’s safety, including a company that has offered assistance following the meeting.

Haun is actively engaging with the community to address concerns and hopes for understanding and support. The rezoning request now moves to the city council for final approval, with a presentation scheduled for October 6. This initiative reflects a broader effort to provide care and support for vulnerable neighbors, aligning with the biblical call to care for those in need, as seen in Matthew 25:35.
