Robert Boyd, Pastor and Mentor in Wesleyan-Holiness Churches, Dies at 91
Robert “Bob” Luther Boyd, a devoted pastor and servant of the Lord, passed away on October 19, 2026, at the age of 91. His life was marked by a deep commitment to sharing the gospel and living out the teachings of Jesus Christ. Known for his exuberance and love of life, Bob’s passion for ministry was evident in the way he preached and served others, even into his 80s.
Born in Odon, Indiana, in 1935, Bob was the son of Wayne and Katherine (Unversaw) Boyd. A talented athlete and musician, he earned a music scholarship to Indiana State University, where he met his future wife, JoAnn. After serving in the United States Army for four years, Bob pursued a career as a band director and music teacher. His work at Lincoln High School in Vincennes, Indiana, included a notable moment when his band performed for President Lyndon Johnson’s visit, an honor that left a lasting impression on him.
In 1966, during a church service, Bob felt a profound calling from God, leading him to dedicate his life to Christian ministry. He served in various capacities across multiple churches and mission societies, including Taylor University, Goshen United Methodist Church, and the Church of God in Dallas, Texas. His ministry extended internationally, with service in Costa Rica and Colombia. Later in life, Bob found great fulfillment in mentoring pastors and offering support and encouragement to those in ministry.
Bob’s family was central to his life. He cherished his children, Christine Hinton, Pat Boyd, Brad Boyd, and Julie Boyd, and his grandchildren, including Crue Boyd, Katie Melson, and others. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren and often expressed his love and prayers for them. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the faith he lived.
Bob’s life and ministry reflected a steadfast belief in the unchanging love of God. He often quoted Romans 8:38-39, which speaks to the assurance of God’s love that nothing can separate from His children. His life was a testament to the power of faith, service, and the enduring message of the gospel.
