In response to a report released on June 25 by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw has detailed the measures it employs to ensure the safety of children within its congregations. This report includes allegations of sexual misconduct by current and former clergy members associated with the diocese. The attorney general’s office is actively investigating such claims across all seven Catholic dioceses in Michigan.
Bishop Robert Gruss expressed deep sorrow and extended an apology to all survivors of abuse within the diocese. “As Bishop of the Diocese of Saginaw, I want to express my deepest sorrows to those who have been victims of abuse by members of the clergy,” Gruss stated. “Please accept my sincere apology for the pain and suffering you have experienced by those who were entrusted with your care. I’m deeply saddened by it all. And, again, I apologize to you on behalf of the Church and our Diocese.”
Bishop Gruss emphasized the diocese’s commitment to greater accountability and transparency, acknowledging the importance of restoring trust that has been compromised by the misconduct of a few. “We must accept our personal and collective responsibility for protecting children and others and continue to remain vigilant in our response in protecting our young people and vulnerable adults,” he asserted.
John Gonzalez, the director of communications for the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw, outlined the avenues available for reporting abuse. He urged anyone with reasonable cause to suspect sexual abuse of a minor by clergy or individuals acting in the name of the Catholic Church to file a complaint with the Attorney General at 844-324-3374. Additionally, survivors of sexual abuse, whether as children or adults, are encouraged to contact the diocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator to receive support in making a formal complaint. This commitment to safeguarding aligns with the biblical call to uphold justice and care for the vulnerable, echoing Micah 6:8, which emphasizes acting justly and loving mercy.
