Sanctuary Church Purchases 40-Acre Compound in Texas for ‘Patriots’
The Sanctuary Church, also known as Rod of Iron Ministries, has acquired a 40-acre property in Thornton, Texas, which it has named “Liberty Rock.” The purchase, valued at nearly $1 million, is intended to serve as a refuge for members of the congregation, whom they refer to as “patriots,” in anticipation of what they believe is an impending conflict instigated by the “deep state.” The church, led by Pastor Hyung Jin “Sean” Moon, is a direct descendant of the Unification Church, founded by his father, Rev. Sun Myung Moon, a figure who was once labeled a cult leader by some critics.
Pastor Moon, who established the Sanctuary Church in 2017 in Newfoundland, Pennsylvania, adheres to the teachings of his late father but with a distinct emphasis on firearms. He interprets a biblical passage from the Book of Revelation as a directive to use high-powered weapons, such as AR-15s, as a means of protection. This perspective has led to the integration of firearms into regular church activities, including wedding ceremonies. The church’s doctrine is further reinforced by the support of his brother, Kook-jin “Justin” Moon, who serves as the CEO of Kahr Arms, a gun manufacturing company located in the same area.
The Sanctuary Church has been a vocal proponent of former President Donald Trump and has embraced his rhetoric surrounding cultural and political battles. Moon has expressed the belief that God is working through Trump to eliminate “political satanism,” which he associates with entities like the “deep state” and “the swamp.” This alignment with Trumpian ideology has facilitated the church’s engagement with certain fringe political figures, including former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, who has spoken at events hosted by the church.
The church’s focus on gun ownership and political activism reflects a broader trend within certain religious groups that seek to intertwine faith with specific political and social agendas. While the Sanctuary Church remains a relatively small congregation, its actions and beliefs highlight the complex relationship between religion, politics, and the interpretation of scripture in contemporary society.
