Street Preacher Arrested After Altercation Outside Bristol University

A street preacher has been arrested after an incident outside the University of Bristol, sparking concerns over public order and the conduct of religious figures in public spaces. Pastor Dia Moodley, known for his regular preaching on a step ladder in Broadmead, was detained by Avon and Somerset police after setting up placards and beginning to preach near the university’s Beacon House.

The altercation allegedly occurred between Pastor Moodley and a number of people outside the building, leading to police intervention. Pastor Moodley has claimed he was arrested for pushing a woman who was standing on one of his placards, which had been knocked to the ground, and that he was also assaulted during the confrontation.

Pastor Moodley is the leader of the Spirit of Life Reformed Baptist Church in Lockleaze, and he stated his intention to preach his beliefs about abortion and engage in discussions with students at the university. A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset police confirmed that several calls were received reporting a public order offence at Queen’s Road.

On arrival, several individuals reported feeling harassed and distressed by a man shouting in the street, with a woman in her 20s alleging she was pushed by the man. A man in his 50s was arrested on suspicion of common assault and a public order offence, later released on bail pending further enquiries.

An allegation that Pastor Moodley was pushed off a stepladder has also been recorded by police as an assault. No charges have been filed against anyone involved, and investigations continue.
