Thiensville, Wisconsin, principal charged with failing to report student abuse by teacher
The principal of Christ Alone Lutheran School in Thiensville, Mike Henning, faces criminal charges for allegedly failing to report student abuse by a teacher. The case underscores the importance of mandatory reporting laws designed to protect minors from harm.
Last year, the school was embroiled in allegations against teacher Daniel Rick, who is accused of inappropriate actions involving students. Rick is alleged to have pulled 9-year-olds onto his lap, given them back rubs, and exposed himself. Henning, as a mandatory reporter, was required to notify law enforcement of any suspected abuse.
Terri Miller, president of the National Center to Stop Educator Sexual Abuse Misconduct and Exploitation (SESAME), emphasized the critical role of mandatory reporting laws. “This is the most dangerous safety issue that is not addressed in our schools,” she said. “That’s the whole point of mandatory reporting laws, is to put children first. To put their safety at the top of the list.”
Despite parental concerns and repeated complaints, Henning continued to oversee the school until he was charged and placed on leave. Miller called for stricter penalties, noting that the current charge is a misdemeanor. “When they fail a child in this way, leaving the child in the clutches of a child predator, I believe the penalty should be minimum a felony offense,” she said.
Prosecutors stated that Henning did not inform law enforcement about the allegations against Rick. During an interview with detectives, Henning described Rick’s behavior as “dumb mistakes.” Police were only alerted to the situation when another mandatory reporter informed the Ozaukee County Department of Human Services.
Christ Alone Lutheran School issued a statement to parents, assuring them that the institution remains committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment. The teacher, Daniel Rick, is currently free on $100,000 cash bail and is scheduled to stand trial next month.
Proverbs 31:8-9 reminds us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves and to defend the rights of the vulnerable. This case highlights the urgent need for accountability and protection in educational settings.
