Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Criticizes J.D. Vance’s Opposition to U.S. Support for Ukraine
J.D. Vance, a prominent American Catholic and critic of U.S. support for Ukraine, has drawn criticism from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). The UGCC, a Byzantine rite church in full communion with Rome, has emphasized that Catholic teachings align with support for Ukraine. Vance, though a recent convert and sincere in his faith, has not aligned with the UGCC’s call for solidarity with Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Vance has opposed military and financial aid to Ukraine, even expressing indifference to the country’s fate. In February 2022, he remarked, “I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine one way or the other.” He has suggested moral equivalence between Russia and Ukraine, downplaying Ukraine’s struggles with corruption while ignoring the moral implications of Russia’s actions. Vance has also criticized Ukraine’s restrictions on the Moscow-affiliated Ukrainian Orthodox Church, yet has not condemned Russia’s attacks on religious freedom in occupied territories.
In April 2024, Vance published an op-ed in the New York Times advocating for ending U.S. aid to Ukraine. He later expanded on the Trump-Vance campaign’s vision for resolving the conflict, which includes Ukraine ceding all territory occupied by Russia and pledging not to join NATO. His stance has been seen as dismissive of the war’s genocidal nature and its broader implications for Western values.
The UGCC, which comprises about 8% of Ukraine’s population, has consistently supported Ukrainian independence and national identity. Since the 2022 invasion, its leaders and members have called for international support for Ukraine and condemned Russia’s actions. The church’s position reflects a long-standing commitment to defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and upholding the moral and theological dimensions of the conflict.
Micah 6:8 calls for justice, mercy, and humility in service. The UGCC’s advocacy for Ukraine embodies these principles, urging Christians to recognize the moral stakes of the war and stand in solidarity with the suffering. Vance’s position, by contrast, has been seen as failing to heed these calls, despite his Catholic faith and the church’s clear moral stance.
