Wesleyan Church Hosts Annual Widow’s Luncheon to Honor Local Widows
The third annual “Widow’s Luncheon” was hosted by the Wesleyan Church of Chester on October 13, offering a gathering for widows in Chester and the Almanor Basin. The event aimed to provide fellowship and affirm that these women are not alone in their grief. The atmosphere was described as upbeat, with Pastor Don Towle leading the group in prayer before a meal was served.
The luncheon featured a menu of pork tenderloin, rice pilaf, sweet potato, green salad, and dinner rolls, prepared by Pastor Towle, Cheryl Dufay, and Wanda Floyd. A wedding cake, decorated by Sherry Johnston, was also served, along with a gift of chocolates for attendees. The event included a display of wedding dresses from different decades, cake toppers, and memorabilia from the attendees’ marriages, creating a nostalgic and personal atmosphere.
Pastor Towle, who has led the Wesleyan Church congregation since January 2016, emphasized the church’s commitment to following God’s teachings to “take care of the widows and the orphans.” He noted that the women who attended expressed appreciation for the event, highlighting its importance in their lives. Stratford, who serves as vice chair on the Wesleyan Church’s board of directors, shared her own experience as a widow and encouraged others to find strength in their faith.
The luncheon also included an opportunity for attendees to share personal stories and questions related to their wedding experiences, which were placed on each table. This interactive element added a communal and reflective tone to the event, fostering connection among the participants.
As part of the Wesleyan Church’s seasonal outreach, warm winter clothing is being donated at the church location on Frost and Gay streets on November 3, from 9 a.m. to noon. The donation includes items such as coats, knitted caps, gloves, and boots, with one item per person available. This initiative reflects the church’s ongoing commitment to serving the community and supporting those in need.
