Westminster Presbyterian Church in Worthington will host its 37th annual free backpack and school supply event on August 13, offering supplies to Nobles County students from Kindergarten through fifth grade. The event runs from 9 a.m. to noon and aims to ensure all children are prepared for the new school year.

The backpack program, coordinated by the church, provides essential school supplies tailored to each child’s grade level. Volunteers assist students in selecting their preferred backpack color and then guide them to their grade-specific table, where they receive folders, notebooks, pencils, markers, and other necessary items based on the school’s requirements.

Norma Cook, the church’s treasurer and co-chair of the backpack program, noted that last year’s event served 658 children. She emphasized the importance of volunteers in helping students choose supplies and the collaborative effort of local merchants, churches, civic groups, and individuals who support the initiative financially.

Cook expressed gratitude for the volunteers and donors, highlighting the community’s commitment to ensuring children have the tools needed for success. While the event has enough volunteers, the organization continues to accept financial donations. Contributions can be mailed to WPC Backpacks at 500 Stower Dr., Worthington, MN 56187, or sent via email to wpcoffice@wpcwgtn.org.

The program reflects a broader commitment to neighbor-love and practical support, aligning with the biblical call to care for the vulnerable. Micah 6:8 reminds us that justice, mercy, and humble service are central to living out our faith.
