Hey brothers and sisters in Christ, it’s Jason with Christ Peer-to-Peer. Today, I want to share a deeply personal story about a friend I had back in the day, who I’ll call Jake McAids.

Over a decade ago, I decided to change my life and start a computer repair shop. Those were some of the best times of my life. I worked hard, learned a lot, and eventually became good at it. I started my business, Bad Gorillas Computer Repair, from my living room in Indianapolis. It was a tough journey, full of competition and even some Craigslist wars with other service providers. But one of those competitors, Jake, became a friend.

Jake and I connected because we had similar goals. He ran his own shop called White Hat Friends. He had a lot of support, and I admired his setup. We spent a lot of time together, smoking pot and getting to know each other. But things changed when Jake got into meth. His life spiraled downwards quickly. He lost his business, his family, and eventually, he got HIV.

Despite his struggles, Jake was smart and had so much potential. But the meth took over, and he surrounded himself with the wrong people. His life became a series of bad decisions and dangerous situations. It was heartbreaking to see my friend, who had so much promise, waste it all.

Jake’s story took a tragic turn when he tried to take his daughter from his wife’s parents’ house. The police charged him with kidnapping, and his face was plastered all over the news. He lost everything, and it was a wake-up call for me. I saw what drugs could do, and I knew I didn’t want to go down the same path.

A few months later, I saw an ad for “Naked Computer Repair” on Craigslist. I called the number, and it was Jake. He was living with his mom and had met a girl at the HIV clinic. They were trying to make ends meet with this questionable business. It was clear he hadn’t changed. Shortly after, I saw his obituary. Jake had died from drinking GHB while playing Minecraft. He was just 30 years old.

Jake was my friend, and I miss him. He had so much potential, and it’s a waste that he never realized it. Brothers and sisters, if you have someone in your life struggling with addiction, don’t give up on them. Support them, love them, and try to help them make better choices.

Let’s learn from Jake’s story and strive to be better, more selfless people. Let’s make the most of the time we have and live lives that honor God.
