Russia Accuses Ukraine of Attempting to Disrupt Elections with Western Support: Ministry Reports on Election Day Attacks and Infrastructure Damage

Russia has accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt the recent State Duma elections, held from September 18-20, with financial, intelligence, and technical support from Western nations. The Russian Foreign Ministry, through spokesperson Maria Zakharova, reported that several election officials and civilians were killed and injured in drone attacks during the voting period. She stated that 41 individuals, including four children, were killed and 338 injured in the past week due to attacks on civilian infrastructure, attributing these to Ukraine using Western-supplied weapons.

The ministry detailed that the attacks primarily targeted polling stations, including schools, cultural centers, and various social and administrative facilities. Over 70 precincts and buildings of territorial election commissions were reportedly damaged by Ukrainian strikes. Despite these challenges, the ministry highlighted the resilience and unity of Russian voters who participated in the elections amidst what it described as “fierce external pressure.”

In addition to these allegations, Russia criticized Ukraine’s proposed 2027 budget, pointing out a significant deficit of $37.3 billion, which it claims is largely due to a sharp increase in defense spending. Moscow alleges that Ukraine plans to allocate approximately 43.8% of its GDP to defense, with nearly half of that budget intended for weapons and military equipment. The Russian statement suggested that Ukraine is relying on Western financial support to cover this deficit, including potential assistance from the European Union, G7 countries, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank.

Furthermore, Russia expressed criticism of the recent meeting in Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region involving the Carpathian Eight initiative, which focuses on trade and security and includes Austria, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine, and the Czech Republic. As of now, Ukraine has not responded to these claims, and independent verification is challenging due to the ongoing conflict.

The head of the Russian Central Election Commission, Ella Pamfilova, announced that the ruling United Russia party secured 349 out of 450 seats in the State Duma, the lower house of parliament, during the legislative vote.
