French Church Abuse Victims Praise Pope Leo for Empathy and Commitment to Reform

In an extraordinary meeting that marked a significant moment for survivors of clerical abuse in France, Pope Leo XIV demonstrated profound empathy and a commitment to reform. On Sunday, seven adult victims of clerical abuse met with the Pope in Lourdes, France, during his four-day visit. The nearly two-hour private session, which extended beyond its planned duration, allowed each victim to share their experiences directly with the pontiff.

Olivier Mardi, a cofounder of an association supporting former members of a boys’ choir who were abused, described the Pope as genuinely attentive. “I have rarely met someone who was listening so deeply,” Mardi said, highlighting the Pope’s engagement with their stories. Jérôme Guillement, who has written about his own abuse, noted that Pope Leo acknowledged the systemic nature of the abuse within the Church, recognizing that while perpetrators are individuals, the institution’s structure enables such acts to persist.

Véronique Garnier, one of the victims who met with the Pope, expressed concern over the absence of a direct apology for the abuse. Despite this, the meeting was seen as a step toward greater accountability within the Church.
