Sunrise Christian Academy Teacher Cited in Sexual Abuse Lawsuit, Suspended by OneLearning Academy

David Yordy, a teacher who previously worked for 19 years at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, is currently a defendant in a civil lawsuit filed in August. The lawsuit alleges that Yordy sexually abused a student and that the school was negligent in its response. While the incidents cited in the legal filing are tied to Sunrise Christian Academy, Yordy also worked as an independent contractor through Angels Academy, which provides physical education classes to various Christian schools and homeschool groups in the Wichita area.

OneLearning Academy (OLA) in Derby was among the institutions that contracted with Yordy for these services. Upon learning of the lawsuit, OLA suspended its agreement with Yordy. Dave Atherton, the lead pastor of OneChurch at Pleasantview, where OLA is housed, stated that the school sent a letter to families on Tuesday informing them of the suspension. Atherton encouraged families to have appropriate conversations with their children and to report any concerns to the school so that they could be addressed and reported appropriately.

The civil lawsuit accuses Yordy of multiple instances of sexual abuse, including attempting to get a student alone and using his position to groom an eight-year-old girl. The filing also accuses Sunrise Christian Academy of failing to conduct a meaningful investigation into the allegations. According to the lawsuit, the girl’s family ultimately made a report to the Bel Aire Police Department after the school’s response.

OLA issued a release stating that, to the school’s knowledge at this time, the allegations tied to the lawsuit do not involve the school or any of its students. To protect the safety and well-being of students, Yordy’s access to OLA students and facilities was revoked for the duration of the suspension while the school reviews the circumstances. The organization emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe environment for the minors in its care.
