NCPC Lifts Ban on Christian Pilgrimage to Israel

The Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) has lifted the suspension on Christian pilgrimage to Israel, declaring the Holy Land safe for visitors. Executive Secretary Bishop Stephen Adegbite announced the decision at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem following a three-day assessment of the security situation. The commission had suspended pilgrimages in February due to hostilities involving Israel, Iran, and the United States.

Adegbite stated that the security environment, particularly in Jerusalem, has improved sufficiently to allow Nigerian pilgrims to resume their visits. He declared the suspension lifted with immediate effect, asserting that the Holy Land is peaceful and will continue to be so. The commission emphasized that this decision was made after direct observation of conditions on the ground.

However, the NCPC specified that pilgrims must travel exclusively through Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv. Bishop Adegbite explained that Jordan remains considered unsafe for pilgrimage operations and that the commission would not expose travelers to unnecessary risks by routing them through that country until the security situation improves.

In a statement issued by Celestine Toruka, Director of Media and Public Relations, Adegbite expressed confidence that the remaining 2026 pilgrimage exercise would be successful. He noted that previous batches of pilgrims had completed their journeys and returned safely, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to the safety and welfare of all Nigerian pilgrims.

The executive secretary also offered prayers for peace in both Israel and Nigeria, specifically invoking protection for President Bola Tinubu, the First Lady, and government officials. He prayed for lasting peace across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and expressed optimism that the resumption of travel would enable more Christians to fulfill their spiritual aspirations in the Holy Land under secure conditions.

The decision reflects a careful balance between spiritual devotion and practical safety, echoing the biblical call to pursue peace where possible while exercising prudent stewardship of one’s well-being. As the community of faith resumes its journey to the Holy Land, the emphasis on safety and responsible travel aligns with the broader Christian commitment to care for one another and honor the sanctity of sacred spaces.
