Scottish faith groups unite to demand UK action on occupation of Palestine

Religious groups across Scotland have united to demand an end to what they describe as the illegal occupation of Palestine. The coalition is calling on the UK government to suspend arms sales to Israel and impose wide-ranging sanctions in response to alleged war crimes. The campaign, known as Time to Act, was launched amid a reported rise in settler violence in the West Bank, which organizers say has decimated both Christian and Muslim communities.

The Just Peace Coalition includes Christian Aid, Justice and Peace Scotland, Sciaf, Pax Christi, and several churches in Scotland. Together, they sent a message to Prime Minister Andy Burnham urging the suspension of UK arms sales to Israel and the UK’s trade partnership agreement with the country until the occupation ends. Faith leaders within the coalition are also calling for accountability from Israeli leaders regarding alleged war crimes.

Val Brown, head of Christian Aid Scotland and coalition spokesperson, stated that the groups have come together because they believe a just and lasting peace is possible for all who call the Holy Land home. She noted that the coalition welcomes steps already taken by the UK government, such as the ban on trade with illegal settlements. Brown emphasized that the campaign aims to mobilize church communities in Scotland and across the UK to stand with their sisters and brothers, raising their voices in a united call to end violence, harassment, displacement, and detentions.

Archbishop William Nolan, president of Justice & Peace Scotland, reported witnessing settler violence firsthand during his annual visit to the Holy Land in January. He described meeting with the Christian community in the West Bank village of Taybeh, where he heard accounts of systemic intimidation, including cars being set alight and vandalism. These firsthand observations form part of the broader narrative of hardship cited by the coalition as they seek international intervention.

The campaign reflects a collective effort by local Christian institutions to address humanitarian conditions and religious freedom in the region. By coordinating with various faith organizations, the coalition seeks to translate moral concern into political advocacy. Their demands focus on specific governmental actions, including trade restrictions and sanctions, as mechanisms to address the ongoing conflict and its impact on local populations.
