Trinity Lutheran Church and Building Community Bridges in Jefferson City held free school supply giveaways this summer, offering essential items to families as the new school year approaches. The events, held on the last weekend before Jefferson City Schools reopen, provided backpacks filled with grade-appropriate supplies, easing the financial burden on parents.

At Trinity Lutheran Church, families lined up for backpacks containing folders, art supplies, and other essentials tailored to different grade levels. Jessica Snyder, a mother of four, praised the event for helping her prepare for her daughter’s pre-kindergarten year. The backpack she received included a variety of items, from dry-erase markers to play dough, reflecting the church’s effort to meet practical needs.

The church has organized the giveaway for about a decade, relying on donations of supplies and money to create the backpacks. Angie Brenner, director of Christian education at Trinity, has volunteered for the event since its inception. She emphasized the significant need for such support, noting the high cost of school supplies.

Annie Ziegelbein, a fifth-grade teacher at Trinity Lutheran School, also volunteered at the event. She shared that the church sometimes includes more expensive items in the backpacks, knowing they can be harder for families to afford. Her involvement highlights the community’s commitment to supporting children’s education through tangible aid.

At Building Community Bridges, Sharena Hampton sought supplies for her daughter entering fourth grade. She appreciated the event’s role in reducing the financial strain of back-to-school preparations. Even with Missouri’s tax-free weekend for school-related items, many families still struggle to afford everything their children need.

The giveaways reflect a broader effort by local organizations to provide practical help during times of need. By offering free supplies, these groups aim to ensure that all children can start the school year with the tools they require. Their work aligns with the biblical call to care for the vulnerable, as seen in Matthew 25:35, where Jesus emphasizes serving those in need.
