Saratoga Springs Panel Discusses Homelessness Amid Shelter Closure Concerns

Saratoga Springs faces a pressing challenge as the city’s 24-hour homeless shelter approaches closure on October 31, 2026, due to funding depletion. This situation has prompted a panel of city leaders to discuss the growing issue of homelessness and the city’s shift from funding services to managing the situation through policing. The panel, organized by Indivisible ADK/Saratoga’s Finding Common Ground committee and moderated by Linda McKenney of the League of Women Voters, took place at the Saratoga Springs Public Library. The event aimed to educate the public about the needs and impacts of homelessness in the community.

Tim Coll, the city’s Public Safety Commissioner, highlighted the significant stress on police resources when addressing the needs of the homeless population. Meanwhile, business owner Heidi West expressed support for the increased police presence on Broadway. The panel also included Judge Francine Vero, who noted her limited use of fines against the homeless, emphasizing the role of the Community Outreach Court in supporting this population.

Linda Gonzalez, co-chair of the Saratoga-North Country Continuum of Care, expressed concern over the shelter’s closure and its implications for the community. Todd Shimkus, president of the Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that the city’s comprehensive plan poses challenges to constructing more affordable housing, a critical component in addressing homelessness.
