Nonprofit Thrift Center Opens in Homer Glen, Offering Secondhand Goods and Community Support
Greater Goods Thrift Center is set to open in Homer Glen on September 10. The new nonprofit will operate at 13412 W. 159th St., offering a space where donated clothes and household goods can be repurposed. The 12,000-square-foot center aims to provide quality items to those in need while ensuring 100 percent of profits support local charities and neighbors.
The initiative was launched through a partnership with Christ Community Church in Lemont. Lisa Applegate, the store director, emphasized the mission of giving items a second life and creating opportunities for community impact. “Greater Goods is about the power of second chances and fresh starts,” she said, highlighting how donations and purchases can contribute to a greater purpose.
Chad De Jager, a founding board member and senior pastor at Christ Community Church, explained the vision behind the project. “Greater Goods grew from a vision at Christ Community Church of finding a new way to connect people to hope through generosity,” he said. The church believes that acts of generosity can inspire others and create a ripple effect of kindness within the community.
Community members are encouraged to participate in various ways. Donations of quality items, shopping at the thrift center, or volunteering time are all ways to contribute. The business shared in a news release that these efforts help sustain the mission of supporting local needs through practical support.
The grand opening event will take place on September 10 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It offers an opportunity for the community to engage with the new center and learn more about its purpose. The event reflects a commitment to neighbor-love and practical mercy, aligning with the biblical call to care for others as described in Matthew 25:35.
This initiative exemplifies the value of generosity and community collaboration. By repurposing items and supporting local charities, the thrift center embodies the spirit of giving and service. It serves as a reminder of the importance of looking out for one another, as encouraged in Galatians 6:10.
