Christadelphian Care Homes (CCH) has submitted plans to replace its existing care home in Knyveton Road, Bournemouth, with a new facility more than double its current size. The existing three-storey building, constructed in 1964, houses 27 rooms for residents of the Christadelphian community, with Bournemouth’s ecclesial branch being the second largest in the country.

Concerns have been raised about the aging structure, which is described as “falling short” of current standards in terms of room sizes, accessibility, and facilities. Maintenance costs are also cited as an increasing burden. The Christadelphians have emphasized that the quality of care provided remains exceptional, but the building is no longer deemed fit for purpose.

The proposed replacement would include 30 rooms and six independent apartments across two buildings. The plan involves phased construction, with the new building at the rear of the site constructed before the existing home is demolished. This approach aims to ensure that the 30 residents can remain on-site throughout the development process.

CCH has stated that alternative locations within the Bournemouth area have been explored, but none have met the organization’s specific requirements. The statement highlights the operational challenges of relocating residents during construction, while also underscoring the necessity of the project for the long-term sustainability of the care home.

The proposed development includes design considerations focused on functionality and the welfare of both staff and residents. It also aims to minimize negative impacts on neighboring properties and preserve the character of the local area. The Christadelphians believe the new facility will not only replace the outdated building but also ensure the continued success of Fairhaven Care Home.

Planning officers at Bournemouth Christchurch Council will review the application in the coming weeks. The outcome of this process will determine whether the Christadelphians can proceed with their plans to modernize and expand their care home facility.
