Plymouth Brethren Christian Church’s church hall and 33 apartments plan approved in Holmewood

Plans for a church hall and 33 apartments have been approved by North East Derbyshire District Council. The development, proposed by Hipper Developments Ltd, includes a church hall for the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and three apartment blocks for individuals aged 55 and above. The site is located off Chesterfield Road in Holmewood, near Chesterfield.

The church hall, which will be exclusively used by the Plymouth Brethren, is part of a broader development that also features a plaza, over 200 car parking spaces, and a service yard. Councillors on the planning committee unanimously approved the application at a meeting on Tuesday. Senior planning officer Alice Lockett noted that the Plymouth Brethren are well represented in the community and are seeking a larger dedicated space for their activities.

The apartment blocks are proposed in the southern part of the site, with seven of the 33 homes designated as affordable. The application received six formal letters of support, though North Wingfield Parish Council raised concerns about increased traffic in the area. One formal objection was submitted by councillor Suzy Cornwell, who highlighted issues related to traffic, parking, wildlife impact, and the lack of clear evidence for the need for housing for people over 55.

Planning officers stated that the benefits of new social infrastructure and housing for older people outweigh the policy and design harm. They recommended approval to the planning committee, which followed through with the decision.
