Janice Eileen James, a cherished member of the Fredericksburg community, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2019, surrounded by her family at Danbury Woods in Wooster. Born on December 22, 1933, in Cleveland, Janice was the daughter of Harold R. and Eileen M. (Rogers) Allshouse. Her life was marked by dedication to education, community service, and faith, embodying the spirit of neighbor-love as reflected in Matthew 25:35.

Janice graduated from James Rhodes High School in 1951 and pursued higher education at Kent State University, where she balanced work and study. Her college years were filled with leadership roles, including serving as a Major in the Ladies Division of ROTC, being named the “Dream Girl” of Theta Chi Fraternity, and being an active member of Delta Zeta Sorority for 65 years. She earned her degree in Elementary Education in 1956 and dedicated 25 years to teaching in the Southeast Local Schools, continuing to contribute as a substitute teacher after retirement.

Beyond her professional achievements, Janice was deeply involved in her church community. As a member of Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, she served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and on the Session and Women’s Task Force. Her commitment to faith and community service was unwavering, reflecting the biblical call to serve others as seen in Galatians 6:10. Janice also participated in the former 20th Century Club and was a lifelong learner, continually engaging in reading and taking college classes throughout her life.

Janice’s family life was filled with love and shared experiences. She married Dale K. James on January 20, 1956, and together they enjoyed winters in Venice, FL, and annual family vacations to Canada. Her legacy is carried on by her children, Susan and Peter Halliday, Scott and Anjanette James, and Sherri and Thomas Machamer, as well as her seven grandchildren: David and his wife Allyson Stoltzfus, Leanne and her husband Austin Rose, Steven Machamer, Denise Machamer, Maria James, Sophia James, and Wilson James.

A memorial service for Janice will be held on Friday, October 25th, at 3:30 p.m. at Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Jack McClelland officiating. Burial will follow at Fredericksburg East Cemetery, and a reception will be held at the church from 5-7 p.m. Tributes can be shared online, and memorial contributions can be made to Ohio’s Hospice LifeCare or Fredericksburg Presbyterian Church. Janice’s life serves as a testament to the impact one person can have through dedication to family, faith, and community, embodying the essence of neighbor-love and service.
