In a tragic incident that has deeply affected the community, Joel Isaias Leiniz, a 38-year-old youth pastor, has been arrested on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office reported that Leiniz was allegedly driving at 104 mph when his vehicle lost control, resulting in a fatal crash on South Military Trail near West Palm Beach on January 17. This devastating event claimed the life of his 8-year-old daughter, Zoe Alaya Leiniz.

Leiniz, who is known to work as a youth pastor in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area, is now facing the dual burden of legal proceedings and personal grief. His defense attorney, Anthony Genova, highlighted the compounded tragedy Leiniz faced, noting that he had recently become a widower after his wife succumbed to cancer. Leiniz’s decision to resign from his job was reportedly motivated by a desire to spend more time with his family during this difficult period.

During a recent court hearing, Leiniz confirmed that he had not held outside employment since January of the same year. When questioned by Circuit Court Judge Donald Hafele about the circumstances surrounding his employment, Leiniz stated that he had resigned to be with his family. The judge set Leiniz’s bond at $150,000, despite the prosecutor’s request for a $200,000 bond.

The crash occurred around 9:55 p.m. after multiple 911 calls were made to report the incident. Deputies found Leiniz driving a 2017 Audi Q7 with three of his children inside. The vehicle collided with a concrete pole, and all four occupants were transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center for treatment. Tragically, 8-year-old Zoe Alaya Leiniz was pronounced dead at 10:46 p.m. due to injuries sustained in the crash.

As the community grapples with this heartbreaking event, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of accountability and the weight of responsibility, themes echoed in Micah 6:8 and Proverbs 31:8-9. The pursuit of justice must be balanced with compassion and care for all affected, aligning with the biblical call to love one’s neighbor and seek peace.
