Madison’s New Men’s Homeless Shelter to Open Next Month Amid Capacity Concerns

Madison, Wis. — The community gathered for a first look inside Madison’s new men’s homeless shelter on Bartillon Drive, a facility that city leaders and service providers hope will provide more dignity, stability, and support for those experiencing homelessness. The shelter, operated by Porchlight, is set to open in less than a month and represents a significant development in the city’s efforts to address homelessness.

The new shelter, designed to help transition individuals from homelessness to permanent housing, includes case management offices and spaces for partner agencies. It offers services aimed at addressing various barriers beyond just providing a bed for the night. Karla Thennes, executive director of Porchlight, emphasized the facility’s purpose-built design, tailored to meet the needs of guests, staff, and partners. The shelter also features a group called Madison Street Medicine, which provides weekly medical services, including volunteer doctors and nurses.

In addition to medical services, the facility offers job training opportunities, including work in its commercial kitchen. However, despite the community’s praise for the shelter’s design and services, concerns remain about its capacity. The shelter can accommodate about 250 men, raising questions about what will happen to those who cannot secure a bed, especially given that the old men’s shelter reached a record high of 400 people in January.

Shanna Sharp, a program case manager with Urban Triage, noted that some clients are anxious about their future housing options. Beth Maglio, outreach director for Friends of the State Street Family, reported an increase in requests for backpacks, sleeping bags, and tents, indicating that people are preparing for the possibility of remaining unsheltered. Despite these concerns, Thennes acknowledged the capacity issues but assured that Porchlight is actively working to help guests secure housing and expand shelter space. The organization has allocated funds for application fees, first month’s rent, and security deposits to prevent a lack of housing funds from becoming a barrier to keeping guests housed.

While the shelter’s limitations are acknowledged, advocates agree that it will still represent a major improvement for those who are able to stay there. As Proverbs 31:8-9 reminds us, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” This new facility is a step toward fulfilling that call to action, providing a place where individuals can return to a bed and secure their belongings, fostering a sense of stability and hope.
