Southern European Pentecostals Collaborate on Church Growth and Leadership Renewal
Southern European Pentecostals regroup as churches grow and younger leaders emerge
Assemblies of God leaders from Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal gathered in May to share resources and strategies for church growth. The Southern Europe Assemblies of God Fellowship (SEAGF), formed in 2011, emphasized the need for collaboration and communication across the continent. Around fifteen representatives attended the meeting, which focused on “service and sacrifice” as they prepare for an anticipated increase in Pentecostal churches in Europe.
In 2024 alone, 452 new Assemblies of God churches were planted on the continent, marking a significant rise compared to previous years. The Assemblies of God in Italy highlighted growth in baptisms and missionary opportunities, while also acknowledging the challenge of retiring around 200 pastors over the next decade.
Representatives from Spain, which has approximately 600 churches and mission points, spoke of generational renewal in leadership. They emphasized an “urgent need for spiritual revival” and highlighted the National Congress of the Assemblies of God in Spain, which set attendance records in 2026.
Portugal, with about 400 Assemblies of God churches, faces challenges such as secularization and the revitalization of historic churches. Leaders stressed the importance of training new leaders and adapting evangelism to reach immigrant communities from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
France representatives noted the vibrant faith of young Christians and planned an event called “Called,” expected to draw 8,000 attendees. They also mentioned the ongoing challenge of cultural and theological diversity within the Assemblies of God.
Participants agreed that Europe needs to shift from a mindset of maintenance to one of multiplication. The Assemblies of God’s “MM33” vision, targeting 2033—a symbolic Christian date—aims to enhance leadership training, plant new congregations, and develop structures for the expansion of the Kingdom of God.
