Eastern Mennonite University President Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus Discusses Navigating Changing Religious Language in Leadership
Rev. Dr. Shannon W. Dycus was formally inaugurated as the 10th president of Eastern Mennonite University on Oct. 10, 2026. She had previously served as interim president for a year before being appointed to the role, with her term beginning on July 1, 2026.
In an interview with WHSV’s Caleb Peek, Dycus discussed her approach to leading a Christian institution in an era of evolving religious attitudes. She noted that while language surrounding faith is shifting, the core mission of EMU remains unchanged. The university continues to emphasize its commitment to living out its values in alignment with its theological foundation.
A February 2026 Pew Research Center study revealed that 64% of Americans still identify as Christian, with 30% falling into the category of those with no religious affiliation. Dycus acknowledged these changing perspectives, emphasizing that the university’s focus remains on fostering community, care for creation, and meaningful engagement with others.
Dycus expressed confidence that EMU’s mission is still rooted in its foundational beliefs. “While the language may be changing, the energy, the impetus, the ways that we know we want to be together with other humans, with creation, is still really foundational for all that we are doing,” she said. She highlighted the importance of adapting communication to resonate more clearly with contemporary audiences.
The university’s leadership continues to navigate the complexities of maintaining its identity while remaining relevant in a society where religious discourse is increasingly diverse. Dycus emphasized the importance of remaining faithful to the university’s mission while engaging thoughtfully with the broader cultural context.
