The Women of Worship from St. Paul Lutheran Church in Manitowoc recently held their annual rummage sale, which raised $2,000 for the Manitowoc Warming Shelter Building Fund. This donation marks a significant step toward providing a permanent home for the shelter, which currently operates out of a temporary location at the church.

On October 7th, the funds were presented to Pastor Matt Sauer, who accepted the donation with deep gratitude. “I’m really excited to be here and want to say thank you, thank you, thank you,” Sauer said. “Not only for monetary gifts, but just for opening your hearts and your space to make this happen.”

Carol Entringer, the organizer of the rummage sale, explained that the event is a regular part of the church’s outreach efforts. “Every year we donate money back to the community in some way, shape, or form,” she said. “This year, we decided to give some of the money to the building fund for the Warming Shelter because we’re going to be hosting at this year.”

The donation will support the construction of a permanent facility for the Warming Shelter. In the meantime, St. Paul Lutheran Church is serving as the shelter’s temporary home this winter, offering guests a place to stay and a warm meal every night. “These are things we all embrace and believe in,” Sauer said. “Housing is a human right. It’s not something that gets conferred upon some and not others.”

Sauer emphasized the importance of community support in addressing housing insecurity. “We have a community that is walking along with us on that, and you’re taking the lead this year. It’s awesome,” he added.

As of now, a permanent location for the Manitowoc Warming Shelter has not yet been determined. The continued support from local churches and community members remains vital in ensuring that those in need have access to shelter and essential services.
