Hartford City Council Member Accused of Embezzling from Local Church, Charged with Money Laundering and Larceny

A Hartford City Council member, Alex Thomas, has been accused of embezzling funds from a local church where he was previously employed. The allegations involve misappropriating church funds between April 2023 and April 2024, directing them to a shell company, and subsequently to his personal accounts. Thomas, identified as the suspect in this case, has been charged with money laundering in the second degree and larceny in the second degree.

Thomas, who served as the Associate Pastor at South Church, was responsible for running the youth group every week. According to Rev. Dr. Adam Soderberg, the church discovered financial discrepancies in 2023, noting that Thomas had spent $49,000 on ministry activities, significantly exceeding the budgeted $25,000. Further investigation revealed additional mismanagement amounting to at least $15,000.

Rev. Soderberg expressed a profound sense of sadness and betrayal, emphasizing the importance of accountability within the church community. He noted that while some of the funds were used for legitimate ministry purposes, the extent of the misappropriation remains unclear.
