Whanganui Food Aid Demand Skyrockets: Local Organizations Struggle to Meet Growing Needs.

In Whanganui, the demand for food aid has escalated, prompting local organizations to work tirelessly to meet the growing needs of the community. Eryn Gribble, lead coordinator of Whanganui Kai Hub, highlights the unprecedented surge in demand, noting that the situation is affecting a broader spectrum of the community than in previous years. Since July, the Kai Hub has been distributing an average of 1323kg of food weekly, equating to approximately 2940 meals, to various food aid and community support groups throughout the city.

Unity, previously known as Unity Food, plays a crucial role in this network by filling the gap in food support over the weekend. Located at Christ Church on Wicksteed St, Unity offers weekly food parcels every Friday from 2pm to 3pm, available to anyone in need without requiring any questions. This service has seen a 50% increase in demand over the past nine months, as observed by Unity manager Mike Pyefinch. In October of the previous year, Unity was providing food parcels to 35 to 40 individuals, but this number has since grown, particularly among the homeless population and, notably, those experiencing street homelessness.

The demographic of those seeking aid has expanded to include older individuals and young families, reflecting a broader community need. Pyefinch, who took over Unity’s management in October 2025 after two decades in social services, emphasizes the importance of supporting people during their most vulnerable times. He shares a personal connection to the cause, having benefited from similar services in his youth, and now chooses to give back to the community. This cycle of compassion and support echoes the biblical principle of loving one’s neighbor, as seen in Matthew 25:35, which encourages acts of mercy and kindness to those in need.
