33 motorists, including a pastor, arrested for drunk driving in KwaZulu-Natal
A pastor is among 33 motorists arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in KwaZulu-Natal. The arrests occurred during a weekend enforcement operation targeting drunk driving on the province’s roads.
The provincial Transport Department reported that the pastor was stopped on the R618 near St Lucia in Mtubatuba. According to the department’s spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, the incident involved a routine traffic stop by the Road Traffic Intelligence (RTI) unit. The pastor was being followed by his congregation at the time.
During the stop, RTI officers noted a heavy smell of alcohol emanating from the vehicle. A breathalyser test administered to the pastor revealed a blood alcohol content of 0.360%, which exceeds the legal limit for driving in South Africa. The department stated that the arrest followed standard procedures and that the pastor is among the 33 motorists detained for drunk driving during the weekend operation.
The Transport Department confirmed that the operation is ongoing and will provide a total figure for the weekend arrests later in the day. The department emphasized its commitment to enforcing road safety laws and reducing incidents of drunk driving.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts by authorities to address road safety concerns, particularly in areas where alcohol-related offenses are prevalent. The arrest of a religious leader underscores the universal nature of such violations and the importance of adhering to legal standards regardless of one’s position or public standing.
The case serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with public office and the need for accountability in all aspects of life. As the Bible reminds us, justice, mercy, and humble service are essential qualities for those in positions of influence.
