A San Diego Church Collaboration Aims to Plant or Rejuvenate 10 Congregations in 10 Years
The La Mesa Church of Christ in San Diego County faces a unique challenge as it seeks to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing community. Planted in 1940 by members of the El Cajon Boulevard Church of Christ, the congregation has become a focal point for an innovative partnership aimed at planting or rejuvenating 10 churches across the San Diego area within a decade. This collaborative effort involves the Heritage 21 Foundation, San Diego Christian Foundation, Kairos Church Planting, and several other congregations. While details remain fluid, the shared vision reflects a commitment to growth and renewal in a region marked by cultural diversity and demographic shifts.
The congregation’s worship space, the Nan Couts Cottage, serves as a community hub in La Mesa’s MacArthur Park. On a recent Sunday, a diverse group gathered for worship, including individuals from varied backgrounds and age groups. The atmosphere was inclusive, with participants ranging from young children taught outdoors by a retired physician to a U.S. Navy sailor on leave and a former member from Japan. The preacher, Graham Clifford, wore Bermuda shorts and had multiple tattoos, reflecting a more casual and approachable style that resonated with the congregation’s eclectic makeup.
The La Mesa Church of Christ has also expanded its reach through digital platforms. Clifford, who has served the congregation since 2006, posts his Sunday sermons online, attracting hundreds of viewers. By Sunday lunch, over 500 had watched the previous Friday’s video, with the total reaching approximately 700 over the week. Wednesday night virtual events on Facebook offer a “mini church service” with a Q&A format, encouraging open dialogue among participants.
Beyond worship, the Cliffords’ home and its welcoming backyard serve as additional spaces for community engagement and events. Clifford noted that the church attracts young people who may not feel comfortable in traditional church settings. This inclusive environment has helped the congregation build a strong sense of community and belonging.
The initiative to plant or rejuvenate 10 churches in 10 years underscores a broader effort to address the needs of a dynamic and diverse population. While the specifics of the plan are still evolving, the collaborative spirit and shared vision among the involved organizations highlight a commitment to faith, community, and growth. The La Mesa Church of Christ stands as a testament to the potential of innovative partnerships in fostering spiritual and communal renewal.
