Adventist Scholar in Russia Advocates for Modern Bible Translations to Enhance Scripture Engagement
Ivan Lobanov, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Bible Translation at Zaoksky Adventist University in Russia, emphasized the value of modern Bible translations in helping more people engage with Scripture. Writing for the Euro-Asia Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Lobanov compared several Russian Bible translations, noting that different versions can meet varying reader needs.
He highlighted the Zaoksky Bible translation, completed in 2015, which was developed from the original biblical languages and includes more than 10,000 footnotes and explanatory notes. Lobanov stated the translation was designed to remain faithful to the biblical text while also assisting readers who lack knowledge of Hebrew or Greek or formal theological training.
Lobanov also pointed out that Bible paraphrases can be beneficial, especially for those new to Scripture. He suggested simpler retellings can help readers grasp the main message more quickly and encourage them to return to fuller translations later. His central message was clear: reading the Bible in any reliable translation is preferable to not reading it at all.
The Zaoksky Bible translation, with its extensive notes and focus on accessibility, reflects the Adventist Church’s commitment to making Scripture understandable and relevant to diverse audiences. This effort aligns with the Church’s broader mission to promote spiritual growth and education through its institutions and outreach.
Other recent developments within the Seventh-day Adventist Church include Southern Adventist University receiving a $3 million federal grant to expand technical training programs. The university will launch new welding and mechatronics certificate programs aimed at workforce development.
In addition, the Church has seen varied news, including a national thanksgiving service held by Ghana’s opposition party at an Adventist church, and a pastor in Alabama pleading not guilty to four charges related to a sex offender case. These events illustrate the diverse activities and challenges faced by the Church in different regions.
