Canada Adventist School Launches 100th-Year Reading and Fundraising Challenge
Prairie Central Adventist Academy (PCAA) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, is celebrating its 100th anniversary with an innovative challenge aimed at encouraging student engagement and community support. Students from grades 3 to 12 are tasked with logging 2,500 minutes of reading within six weeks, while younger students have a slightly smaller goal. In addition to reading, students are also raising $5,000 to renovate the school’s kitchen, which requires significant upgrades.
Principal Ian Mighty, who previously led a similar challenge nearly two decades ago, is participating alongside four teachers. None of the participants have experienced rooftop camping before. To add an extra incentive, Mr. Waite has promised to shave his beard, and Chaplain Pastor Young will shave his head if the students meet the goal by March 14.
The challenge reflects the school’s commitment to fostering both academic growth and community involvement. By combining reading goals with fundraising efforts, PCAA aims to instill values of responsibility, dedication, and service among its students. The school’s leadership emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities for students to contribute meaningfully to their school and community.
The initiative also highlights the Adventist educational philosophy, which prioritizes holistic development. Through such activities, PCAA seeks to nurture not only intellectual growth but also a sense of purpose and civic responsibility. The challenge underscores the Adventist emphasis on education as a means of personal and communal transformation.
The school’s efforts align with broader Adventist mission work, which includes providing quality education and supporting the well-being of students and their families. By engaging students in a tangible way, PCAA reinforces the Adventist belief in the value of service and the importance of preparing young people to contribute positively to society. The challenge serves as a practical example of how Adventist institutions strive to integrate faith with action.
