Anglican Church Honours Former Newswatch Editor with Distinguished Service Award
The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion recently honored Dr. Jossy Nkwocha, former General Editor of Newswatch Magazine, with a distinguished service award during a four-day conference for church communicators and media officers. The recognition was presented on June 24 by Most Rev Blessing Enyindah, Dean of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, who represented the Primate, Most Rev Henry Ndukuba. Dr. Nkwocha was acknowledged for his three-year role as chairman of the conference central planning committee from 2024 to 2026.
Dr. Nkwocha, who serves as the Diocesan Communicator of the Evo Diocese, dedicated the award to Bishop Innocent Ordu of the Evo Diocese, who appointed him to his current role. He also acknowledged Bishop Enyinnaya Okorafor of his home Diocese of Egbu, whose predecessor, Rt. Rev Emmanuel Iheagwam, had knighted him in 2004. The award was a tribute to his dedication and service in communication and media within the Anglican Communion.
In his remarks, Dr. Nkwocha expressed gratitude to the members of the planning committee, highlighting the collaborative effort that contributed to the success of the conferences. He specifically thanked Venerable Raphael Aderinwale, Director of Communication; Korede Akintunde, General Manager of Advent Cable Network TV; Mrs. Mojisola Olatinwo, Secretary; Venerable Ikechukwu Ihemtuge, LOC chairman; and others for their contributions. He also recognized Venerable Barnabas Bulus, who will take over his role, and fellow delegates from various dioceses and provinces.
The conference, themed “The Watchman’s Trumpet, the future of the great commission,” emphasized the vital role of media in spreading the gospel amid a world marked by sinfulness, injustice, and depravity. Archbishop Enyindah, along with other bishops and church leaders, underscored the responsibility of communicators to serve as Christ’s ambassadors. The event brought together representatives from across the Anglican Communion to discuss strategies for effective communication and outreach.
A communique issued at the conclusion of the conference called on all diocesan communicators and media officers to embrace their role as ambassadors of Christ. The gathering highlighted the importance of using media platforms to advance the church’s mission and address contemporary challenges. The event reflected the Anglican Communion’s commitment to leveraging communication as a tool for evangelization and social responsibility.
As the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion continues to prioritize media engagement, the recognition of Dr. Nkwocha serves as a testament to the value of dedicated communicators in advancing the church’s mission. The conference underscored the need for unity, clarity, and purpose in communication, aligning with the biblical call to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Through such efforts, the Anglican Communion seeks to fulfill its mandate to proclaim the gospel and serve the community with integrity and compassion.
