Appeals Court Judge Calls $5 Million Bond for Catholic Priest “Staggering” but Within Lower Courts’ Discretion
Appeals Court Judge Pierre Bergeron called the $5 million bond set for Catholic priest Geoff Drew “staggering,” yet affirmed that the lower court had not abused its discretion in determining the amount. Drew, 59, is charged with nine counts of rape for allegedly abusing an altar boy from 1988 to 1991. The bond, which remains in place, is the subject of a motion by Drew’s defense attorney, Brandon Moermond, who argues it is excessive given Drew’s financial situation.
Drew, who has no income and sold his condo and car, would live with his 81-year-old mother if released on bond. He has been held in the Hamilton County Justice Center since his August 2019 arrest. Moermond’s request for reconsideration of the bond amount was denied by the three-member appeals court in a unanimous decision on September 9. The court acknowledged the bond’s high amount but found insufficient evidence to suggest the lower court’s decision was unjust.
The case has drawn attention due to the significant disparity between Drew’s bond and those set for other serious offenses, including murder. Despite the appeals court’s concerns, it ruled that the lower court’s decision was within its legal authority. Moermond emphasized that Drew is willing to take steps to secure his release on a more reasonable bond.
The alleged victim, who was in the fourth grade at the time of the abuse, reported the incidents to police. According to a Green Township Police incident report, the abuse occurred while Drew was serving as the musical director at St. Jude’s. At the time, he was not an ordained priest. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati removed Drew from his position as pastor at St. Ignatius of Loyola in July 2019 following repeated complaints about his conduct with minors. The archdiocese stated none of the previous complaints involved illegal activity.
The case highlights the ongoing challenges of ensuring accountability for clergy accused of misconduct. Legal proceedings continue as the court weighs the appropriate measures for a defendant charged with serious crimes against minors. The situation underscores the need for careful consideration of both legal standards and the protection of victims.
